Klamath Falls, Oregon – The Oregon Department of Revenue is holding a special event at the Klamath County Library in Klamath Falls in an effort to assist local taxpayers. Volunteers will help attendees in e-filing their tax returns for free utilizing IRS Direct File and Direct File Oregon systems on Wednesday, February 12 from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. This program guarantees that individuals may claim all qualified tax credits, including major federal and state incentives for low-income families, therefore simplifying the filing procedure.
Focused on optimizing the use of the new free filing choices, the library, which is located at 126 South Third Street, will become as a hub for tax assistance. It is estimated that around 11,000 residents in Klamath County are eligible for these services, yet many are not fully utilizing such available resources. With unclaimed credits in the state of around $100 million in 2020 alone, the IRS pointed out that almost a quarter of qualified Oregon taxpayers do not claim the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC).
Taxpayers are urged to first use the IRS online eligibility checker to first determine their eligibility for IRS Direct File and Direct File Oregon. To expedite their filing, they should also open an IRS online account and an Oregon Revenue Online account before the event.

Participants should bring several important documents on the day of the event to help with filing. Identification requirements include a social security card or ITIN for every individual listed on the tax return and a government-issued photo ID for the taxpayer and spouse if filing jointly.
Common income and tax records needed include SSA-1099 for Social Security benefits and Forms W2, 1099. For those who would want their refund sent straight to direct deposit, customers may also submit last year’s tax return, a canceled check or bank routing and account number.
The program of the Department of Revenue is a part of a larger endeavor to promote the use of free filing options and assist more taxpayers, especially those with lower incomes, to access and claim tax credits that might offer significant financial assistance. The local libraries page of the department offers information about this event and other free Direct File support possibilities together with tools and direction on how to prepare for a visit.
