Klamath County announces new grant program, offers $100,000 to help Klamath farmers battle insect infestations

Klamath County, Oregon – Strategically safeguarding its agricultural industry, Klamath County has launched a new grant program meant to assist ranchers and farmers against severe infestations of grasshoppers and Mormon crickets. These pests seriously jeopardize the local livelihoods and the ecology since they have caused great harm to the crops and natural surroundings.

Recently, the Oregon Legislature established laws (SB 5701, Section 408) and a Temporary Administrative Order to assist with pest control projects aiming at lessening the damage these insects wreak on agricultural fields. The Oregon Department of Agriculture has set aside $100,000 under this program to support the agricultural community in Klamath County.

The county developed a reimbursement grant program to handle this money. Appointed to supervise the application and distribution procedure is a special committee of representatives of the Klamath Irrigation District, Klamath Drainage District, Van Brimmer Ditch Co., and two at- least residents. Examining the entries from impacted ranchers and farmers, this committee is supposed to suggest fund distribution to the Klamath County Board of Commissioners.

The grant application period is established from October 15 to October 31; the closing day’s stringent deadline is 5:00 PM. Late applications are not accepted. The committee will get together in November following the application process to go over all ideas and finalize their funding recommendations.

The official Klamath County Grants Website has application forms for those in need among farmers and ranchers. Although county officials admit that the $100,000 might not cover all losses, this financial assistance is seen as a vital first step in helping the most affected farming community members through this difficult period.
