Klamath County empowers young leaders with hands-on roles in local government panels

Klamath County, Oregon – Klamath County has started a creative project to include high school kids into its civic activities, hence involving young brains in local government. Two important committees—the Klamath County Tourism Grant and Economic Development Grant Review Panels—were recently recognized by the Klamath County Board of Commissioners as having junior member roles established. This action intends to empower young people to truly impact the future growth of their community by using their new viewpoints and creative ideas.

Open to all Klamath County high school students, the program offers them a special chance to engage directly in the decision-making processes influencing local tourism and economic development. Chosen students will serve a one-school-year term actively participating in talks and decisions about local grant financing.

“We’re thrilled to invite students to take an active role in the decision-making that impacts their community,” said the Board of Commissioners. “This is more than a learning experience — it’s a chance to lead.”

These posts are now available; the application deadline is May 16, 2025. The County hopes to choose and place the first two junior members by this fall in line with the next funding cycles. This strategic timing ensures that the students’ contributions will be relevant and significant, hence affecting funding decisions for the next year.

Students who are just eager to make a real impact in their area or those interested in civic involvement, community development are invited to apply. This project not only offers them a forum to express their thoughts but also a practical experience in public service and government.

Those wishing to apply or wanting additional information may contact Klamath County Grants Manager Don Beatty at [email protected] or 541.851.3637. Students can use this contact point to ask more about the application procedure and the responsibilities related to these junior posts.
