Klamath Falls, Oregon – More than 500 teachers and administrators filled Henley High School on Aug. 25, but students were not yet in the seats. This time, the district’s educators were the ones learning, planning and preparing for what comes next.
The districtwide beginning-of-the-year inservice day brought KCSD staff together for professional development, collaboration and a shared message before most students return to classrooms on Monday, Aug. 31.
Superintendent Melissa Cole used her welcome to center the day on the role educators play well beyond lessons and schedules. She described that responsibility in simple terms: giving students hope.
“We truly are givers of hope,” Cole said. “We give hope each and every day. Through great instruction. Through high expectations. Through positive interventions.”

Her message also stressed persistence as staff members prepare for another school year. Cole challenged educators to keep showing up for students with grit, belief and a willingness to work together, while making clear that success cannot rest on any one person or campus.
“It takes more than one great teacher. It takes more than one great school leader. And it takes more than one great school,” she said.
That team-centered approach is reflected in the district’s mission entering the new academic year: “One Team. One Goal. Student Success.”
The Aug. 25 gathering gave hundreds of staff members an opportunity to reconnect before classrooms once again fill with students. Along with professional learning, the day served as a starting point for the work ahead and a reminder that educators across the district share the same broader goal.
Cole acknowledged that the year will bring both difficult work and moments worth celebrating.
“We’re going to do some tough work. We’re going to have a lot of celebrations. But I can promise you one thing. It’s worth it. And we can do it together.”
