Klamath County, Oregon – With a key budget season approaching, Klamath County is looking to bring another community voice into the room at an especially important moment.
The county has opened a vacancy for the Alternate position on its Budget Committee, and this year the role carries unusual weight: the person selected will serve as a voting member during the upcoming budget process.

The opening comes with a tight timeline. Anyone interested in serving must submit an application by 5:00 p.m. on Monday, April 20. Applicants also need to be available for an interview with the Board of County Commissioners on Tuesday, April 21, and must be able to attend all budget hearings scheduled from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. on April 27, 28, and 29, 2026.
County leaders say the position is more than ceremonial. The Budget Committee plays a direct role in helping the Board of County Commissioners meet its responsibilities under Oregon Budget Law, specifically ORS 294.305 to 294.565. Just as importantly, it gives residents a practical way to take part in decisions that affect county services, priorities, and long-term planning.
For this year’s hearings, the Alternate will step into a full voting role, making the appointment particularly significant. After that, the person chosen will continue serving for the remainder of the term and will step in whenever a regular Budget Committee member is unable to participate in hearings. That structure is designed to keep the process moving while preserving public representation in county financial discussions.
The Board of County Commissioners has made clear that community input matters as budget choices are made. In a process often shaped by numbers, schedules, and legal requirements, the committee offers something just as valuable: perspective from the public. That outside viewpoint can help ground budget debates in the everyday realities of the people the county serves.
For residents who want a closer look at how local government works, the vacancy offers a rare chance to move from observer to participant. Budget decisions help shape the county’s path, and this role places one community member close to the center of that conversation.
