Klamath Union High School receives grant to prepare the next generation of healthcare professionals

Klamath Falls, Oregon – Oregon has announced the distribution of $42 million in grant money towards a range of workforce training initiatives in an ambitious effort to strengthen its workforce. This significant investment is part of the final round of a larger $200 million initiative, Future Ready Oregon, established by state lawmakers in 2022 to address critical workforce shortages in sectors like health care, manufacturing, and technology.

The funding represents a strategic attempt by the government to satisfy the rising need for trained people, especially in sectors with significant job growth and economic importance. Oregon’s health care sector alone has witnessed the addition of nearly 17,000 jobs over the last year. Moreover, experts predict a sharp increase in the need for skilled personnel in the semiconductor industry, emphasizing the importance of this timely initiative.

Funding from both federal COVID assistance and state general money, Future Ready Oregon focuses on improving the employability and skills of diverse groups. This covers communities of color, women, those with disabilities, veterans, rural area residents, tribal members, and the LGBTQ+ community.

Jennifer Purcell, director of Future Ready Oregon, highlighted the dual benefits of the program. “Individuals, particularly those who have been marginalized and underserved, face barriers to accessing and completing education and training that is needed to connect to high wage, high demand jobs,” Purcell told Oregon Public Broadcasting.

The Higher Education Coordinating Commission of the state handles the distribution of these funds. In line with federal recommendations, the commission has a responsibility to guarantee that the money is spent effectively until the end of 2026. Purcell expressed optimism regarding the results of these initiatives and said that the goal is to pinpoint successful models and create scalable, replicable policies all over the state.

Among the outstanding grantees of the third round of funding are several schools and community organizations proving dedication to increase Oregon’s workforce readiness:

  • Klamath Union High School was awarded $440,843 to kickstart a new health occupations program for students, aiming to prepare the next generation of healthcare professionals.
  • Bushnell University School of Nursing received $1 million to expand its bachelor’s degree nursing program, which focuses on preparing nurses for rural Lane County hospitals.
  • Clackamas Community College also received $1 million, partnering with 20 organizations to provide extensive training in various manufacturing careers.
  • Afghan Support Network was granted $623,902 to facilitate IT certification training for Afghan refugees, integrating them into Oregon’s growing technology sector.

Through this focused strategy in grant distribution, the training programs not only fit the economic interests of the state but also meet the particular demands of its diverse population. From industry and healthcare to information technology, the sponsored initiatives cover a large geographic area and include a wide spectrum of vocational and technical training.
