Bonanza High School science students get hands-on college lab experience at Oregon Tech

Klamath Falls, Oregon – Bonanza High School students stepped out of their regular science classroom this week and into a setting that gave their lessons a new kind of energy: the college laboratories at Oregon Institute of Technology.

Early in the week, Dual Credit Science Juniors from Bonanza High School visited Oregon Tech for a hands-on learning experience designed to connect classroom instruction with real-world science. Instead of studying concepts only from notes, discussions, and textbooks, students had the chance to work in college-level lab spaces and see how scientific ideas are applied in a university environment.

The visit gave students a closer look at what learning can feel like beyond high school. In the labs, they were able to take part in hands-on experiments, use scientific thinking in practical ways, and experience the kind of setting they may one day enter as college students. For many, it was also a chance to imagine future paths in science, healthcare, engineering, and technology.

Opportunities like this help build an important bridge between high school and higher education. Dual credit programs already give students a step toward college-level learning, but experiences outside the classroom can make that connection even stronger. A day spent inside a university lab can turn a future goal into something more visible, more real, and more reachable.

The students represented Bonanza with curiosity, professionalism, and a strong commitment to learning. Their visit showed the value of giving young people access to spaces where they can explore, ask questions, and test their knowledge in meaningful ways.

The experience also highlighted the role of partnerships between schools and higher education institutions. By welcoming the students, faculty and staff at Oregon Institute of Technology helped provide more than a field trip. They offered a glimpse into the next stage of academic and career growth.

For Bonanza’s Dual Credit Science Juniors, the day brought together hands-on lab experience, college-level learning, and preparation for future success. It was a reminder that sometimes the strongest lessons happen when students are given room to explore the world beyond their desks.
