Klamath Falls, Oregon – A career in health care does not always begin beside a hospital bed. Sometimes it starts behind a computer, where patient records must be accurate, private and protected.
Klamath Community College is offering students a faster route into that essential work through its Health Information Management program. The certificate pathway can be completed in as little as nine months, allowing students who begin in the fall to finish by spring.

The program focuses on practical office skills used in health care settings and transferable to other business careers. Students learn how organizations manage sensitive information, follow privacy requirements and protect data in an increasingly digital workplace.
Coursework covers Health Information Management privacy and security, including the rules and practices connected to HIPAA compliance. Students also examine the legal and ethical responsibilities involved in maintaining health records and handling confidential patient information.
Other areas of study include health data management, the release of information process, electronic health records and health informatics. Together, these subjects provide a foundation for understanding how medical information moves through health care systems and how it must be stored, shared and protected.
The program also introduces students to information protection and health care cybersecurity. Those skills are becoming increasingly relevant as medical offices, hospitals and other organizations rely on electronic systems to manage records and daily operations.

Beyond preparing students for administrative work in health care, the pathway provides opportunities to explore careers connected to information technology, cybersecurity and data management. That range may appeal to students who are interested in health care but prefer work centered on organization, technology, privacy and information systems.
The short completion timeline is designed to help students move through the pathway quickly while building skills they can apply in real workplaces. By spring, students who start in the fall could have completed the certificate and gained exposure to several possible career directions.
