Klamath County Fire District 1 promotes fireworks safety to prevent injuries and holiday incidents

Klamath County, Oregon – As the Fourth of July approaches, Klamath County Fire District 1 has put out a public warning asking people to be extra careful when using fireworks. The “Four Be’s of Fireworks Safety” are a simple but important message that the advise wants to get out to lower the danger of fires and injury during the holiday celebrations.

Be Responsible is the first thing on the list. It informs people how to handle used fireworks safely. Officials say that before throwing away used pyrotechnics, they should be soaked in a bucket of water. Fire District 1 also says not to try to relight “dud” fireworks. Instead, they say to wait at least 15 to 20 minutes before carefully soaking and throwing them away.

Next is Be Prepared, which tells you to keep fireworks out of the reach of kids and always read and obey the instructions on the labels. People are also encouraged to bring their dogs inside during fireworks shows since the loud noises and bright lights can scare them. Another important thing that officials say can make all the difference if something goes wrong is to have a hose or pail of water nearby.

The advisory goes on with “Be Aware,” which stresses the necessity of only using legal fireworks in Oregon and only lighting them off in permitted areas. Klamath County Fire District 1 wants everyone to know that pyrotechnics are not allowed on any beaches, in state parks, or on state or federal forest land. These are sites where a stray spark might start a huge fire. The advisory also warns that you shouldn’t change fireworks in any manner, as this considerably raises the danger of mishaps.

Finally, Be Safe ends the safety campaign with these important points: only adults should light fireworks, and they should never light more than one firecracker at a time. Once a firework is lit, moving away quickly is vital to avoid injury. The advisory also urges individuals not to hold or toss pyrotechnics and to keep all matches and lighters away from kids at all times.

Fire District 1 officials hope these rules will help people remember that fireworks can be a fun part of the Fourth of July, but they can also be quite dangerous if not handled properly. By following the Four Be’s, community members can help ensure a safe and enjoyable holiday for everyone.
