Klamath County reopens grant program to help farmers battle grasshopper and cricket infestations

Klamath County, Oregon – Klamath County is taking additional steps to protect local farming from a growing threat. Grasshoppers and Mormon crickets continue to damage crops and rangelands throughout the region, which is placing a lot of stress on the farmers and ranchers. The county has reactivated a grant program that helps people who are having trouble paying for pest control bills.

The program helps producers directly who have spent their own money fighting these pests. County officials say that the infestation is a severe threat to both the farming industry and the surrounding ecosystems since the insects eat plants at an alarming rate, depleting pastures and hurting the health of the soil.

A special committee will be in charge of the grant process. The Klamath Irrigation District, the Klamath Drainage District, the Van Brimmer Ditch Company, and two community members at large are all on the group. Their job is to look over applications from farmers and ranchers who are affected and suggest how much money should be given to them to the Board of Commissioners.

The Klamath County Grants Office is now accepting applications for reimbursement. People who are interested can get the forms they need on the county’s official website. The deadline for submissions is Friday, November 14, 2025, at 5:00 p.m.

Klamath County leaders say the awards are a big step toward keeping the area’s farms productive even as pest problems get worse. The program’s goal is to help people who are losing a lot of money right away, even though long-term solutions may depend on better management of the environment as a whole.

People who live in Klamath County who want more information or help with the application process should call the Klamath County Grants Office at 541-851-3637. The county wants all qualified producers to apply immediately, before the deadline.
